In May of 1775, 250 years ago, Pownal played a crucial role in securing America’s first victory in the Revolutionary War. The Green Mountain Boys from Pownal organized and marched ahead of others, contributing to the successful capture of Fort Ticonderoga.
As we celbrate Pownal’s history, we would like to highlight Mr. Lawrence Chaffee. He was born in Pownal on June 27, 1916, to Ira Allen and Goldie Morgan (Young) Chaffee. He received his early education in Pownal schools and graduated from the former Bennington High School.
A dedicated World War II Army veteran, he served his country from 1941 to 1945. As a member of a combat team aboard the USAT President Coolidge, he courageously survived the ship’s sinking on October 26, 1942. In recognition of his service, Lawrence was honored with numerous military awards, including the Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, which features “Efficiency, Honor, and Fidelity” on the front, recognizing his dedication and exemplary character.
Throughout his career, Mr. Chaffee worked at the former General Cable Company in Pownal for many years before retiring. A devoted and active member of the Pownal Center Community Church, he gave much of his time to his faith and community. His passions included birdwatching and nurturing plants, which brought him great joy.
